Synthetic or Petroleum- Seems like such a simple question. The answer a little more involved. What type of riding do you do? Long hauls or short blasts? How often do you change your oil? Are you strict about your scheduled maintenance or you can’t remember the last time it was changed? Synthetic is superior when it comes to thermal break down, keeping the motor at a cooler running temperature, and is formulated for outstanding wear protection under extreme conditions. Petroleum has its advantages too. The oil we know as regular 20/50 is actually part synthetic. Most obvious is the price, which is less than ½ of a quart of synthetic. Petroleum is able to absorb moisture better than a full synthetic. If you don’t run your bike long enough to get the oil to 212 degrees Fahrenheit so condensation can evaporate, the petroleum oil is more forgiving.
